MEMORIAL MASS PANASHVIDI IN HONOUR OF THE LATE HEAD OF THE ROYAL HOUSE OF GEORGIA: HRH PRINCE GIORGI
A memorial mass was said for the eternal repose of the soul of His late Royal Highness The Prince Giorgi Bagration Mukhran Batonishvili former head of the Royal House of Georgia and father of the present head, His Royal Highness The Prince Davit, who died in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 16th January, 2008.
The Prince Giorgi, son of the Their late Royal Highnesses Prince Irakly and Princess Maria Antonietta Bagration of Mukhrani, was buried with Royal Honours in the Royal Family Pantheon, within Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, in the city of Mzkheta, former capital of the Kingdom of Georgia.
A very sizeable congregation attended the remembrance service and joined in the prayers for the late head of the Royal House. His Royal Highness The Prince Giorgi is remembered with affection and deep respect by many Georgians, who each year congregate at the Cathedral to commemorate his life.
Prince Giorgi became the head of the Royal House of Georgia, on the death of his father Prince Irakly Bagration of Mukhrani on 30th October, 1977 in Madrid.
The much loved Prince Giorgi was recognised in 1991 by the Georgian government and parliament as head of the former royal family despite rival claims by other branches of the Bagrationi dynasty. He was also Grand Master of the Order of the Eagle of Georgia and the Seamless Tunic of Our Lord Jesus Christ .
